After months of market research on extension technology, I kept stumbling across the term "Lace Wigs" and could not help but wonder, "What is all the hype about?".
Well, after a thorough investigation, I figured it out and must agree that lace wigs are indeed the Rolls Royce of extension technology because of their ability to be 100% undetectable when worn. The worries of bulky weaves to hide tracks or the common texture or color "blending" issues to obtain a natural part or hairline are now over.
Lace wigs are made with a very fine lace "netting" that individual hairs are attached to. When this material is placed on your skin, it disappears and creates the illusion that the hair is growing out of your own scalp. The hair swivels freely on the base so it mimics natural growing hair. Lace wigs can even be worn while swimming but, most importantly, when the wig is properly attached, the hair can be pulled back or up in a ponytail and still be 100% undetectable!
During my investigation process, I seemed to find quite a few images of Tyra Banks and Beyonce Knowles as well as terms such as "Tyra Banks lace wigs" or "Beyonce lace wigs". Are these really lace wigs that they are wearing or do they just have weaves that look way too real? Well, they are obviously wearing lace wigs, yet, the million dollar question still remains, "But how can you tell?",......YOU CAN'T!! Which is the exact reason why lace wigs are the best alternative to extensions available on the market to date.
Now, the one major difference I did find in lace wigs are the prices. Some wigs cost as little as $400 whereas some others as much as $1500 per unit. So, what is the major difference between the lace wigs to cause such a difference in price? Pretty much, nothing HOWEVER we have found that some cheaply priced units come from factories who add synthetic or non-remy hair with their remy hair. This allows the factory to create lace wigs with minimal material expense and sell them to stores who are looking to get the lowest price,....and the lowest quality. BUYER BEWARE!!! You get what you pay for.
The best lace wigs are made in China, which makes sense since most of the hair on the market is currently being exported from China. Most lace wigs are also made with Remy (Indian or Chinese) Human Hair which is the best quality hair on the market, however, the price to import them in the U.S. is basically the same.
Some stores charge a reasonable price for their lace wigs however there are additional charges for pricy options such as "custom" color or baby hair or Remy Human Hair, etc. By the time you have customized your wig, you are buying a unit that costs nearly $700 even though it was advertised for $400. Other stores will allow you to select the celebrity picture and order that unit however you are unable to customize the unit and it will still cost you the same $700.
The only "deals" I have been able to locate are the "in stock" units that ship the next day (instead of the 4 week time frame it takes to customize your unit) however there are only a limited number of units available of which most, if not all, are sold out. In addition, you are stuck purchasing that exact unit with no option to change the size, hair color, length, etc.
Some stores offer their lace wigs at inflated prices but they offer a service as well such as customer service, "professional" consultations, licensed representatives, etc. These services can prove to be very valuable to a first time buyer of lace wigs because they tend to include instructions on how to attach your unit or a phone consultation walking you through the process. However, those who are more experienced with their units might find more value in NOT paying the additional price for a service they very well do not need.
The conclusion of my research remains that "basically" no matter whom you purchase your "professionally made" lace wig from, it will be a quality unit and you will leave the shop looking and feeling like a true "celebrity".
